April 4. 2013 - Crain's New York online business magazine is reporting on NY States raising of the unemployment benefit beginning in 2014: " Organized labor quietly scored a major overlooked victory in the 2013 state budget: A provision that will raise the unemployment benefits New Yorkers can collect for the first time in 14 years. The minimum payment will jump from $64 weekly to $100. The maximum will jump in October 2014 from $405 to $420, and then permanently become 50% of a workers' average weekly wage in 2026. "A staggering 40% of recipients will see an increase in their unemployment insurance through a raise in the woefully inadequate benefit cap," said AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento. The increase is being funded by an increase in the taxable wage base paid by businesses: up to $13,000 in 2026 from the current $8,500. Nonetheless, the state Business Council also supports the changes, saying in a statement that reforms to the program "provide much needed stability to the unemployment system and give businesses a clearer way to manage their unemployment insurance costs, while restoring the state's Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund to long-term solvency."
